Historical Lore

Rock crystal (clear quartz) has been used since antiquity across many ancient civilizations, including Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China. It was carved into beads, seals, and ornamental objects, and in some cultures was believed to be permanently frozen ice due to its clarity. The ancient Greeks referred to quartz as “krystallos,” meaning ice. Throughout history, it has been widely used in decorative carving, ceremonial objects, and early optical tools such as simple lenses in medieval Europe.
