Historical Lore

Amethyst is a variety of quartz used since antiquity, with documented historical use in ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome. It was commonly carved into beads, seals, and jewellery and was widely traded throughout the Mediterranean. The name comes from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated,” reflecting an ancient belief that the stone could prevent drunkenness. Banded amethyst forms when layers of quartz and amethyst grow together over time, and it is primarily valued today for its distinctive natural patterning and decorative use.
